When it comes to showcasing your talent, you only get one chance at a first impression. That being said, you want to make that first impression count, and that means your best songs 1st, with at least a mixdown (and if possible mastered), on a proffessional looking cd, not a copy.
Think about it, anyone you give your music to that’s worth his/her salt, is going to be receiving possibly hundreds of cd’s a week. I can tell you right now, the majority of them are thrown out on looks alone. Another big bunch of them are tossed out on the basis of poor sound quality. the few that actually get listened to are the proffessional looking, and sounding ones. However, if they don’t like the feel of that first song they might not even listen to the secound, let alone the third.
It’s also good to know the people you are submitting your music to.
Be sure to customize your demo to what they might be looking for. Do your research. Don’t just guess. Find out who the just signed, what songs the just released, what does their website say and promote. The more research the better your chances so no slacking. You’ll only get out of it what you put in.
Lastly, if you can include proffessional bio and pictures, it will only help your cause. Remember, the more it looks as though you are a proffessional buisness man or women, and have that buisness together, the more likely they are to lend you their proffessional ear.
Don’t ever stop! Power to you!

I heard this guy for the first time tonight and I must say I was impressed. Good lyrical hip hop that flows and has my head bobbing. Belive me that is tough to do. From Florida this guy is serious. You need to check this guy and 3rd Eye Entertainment out. We are going to get him on our radio, but in the meantime you can check his music out for your self. Shae from Dade
Scrappy Radio is excited to feature Arden Park Roots out of Sacramento California.
Dr. Pete Venkman writes:
Well today boys and girls we are going to visit with our friends Arden Park Roots…straight outta Sac-town. Ok ok, enough Mr. Rogers nonsense…let’s get to talking music.
I have had a few opportunities to check out Arden Park Roots, affectionately known to fans as AP Roots, at a few different local Sacto venues. These young guys are pretty impressive especially given the throng of reggae-rock type bands currently out in the California transom. Right now my two unsigned fave’s in this genre include these guys and Seed from Bakersfield.
First I have to say that the guys from AP Roots have more than their fair share of adoring female fans and that is more than a plus in my book. But let me tell ya, AP Roots is more than just some hot piece of ass – and I say that with an unblemished record of staunch heterosexuality. These guys can play, sing and write. As Yoda would say, “Very talented musicians, yes they are, mmmmm!”
Tyler Campbell, vocalist supremo for AP Roots leads this band with talent and confidence. His vocals sound even better live than they do recorded and as we all know, that is a key mark of a good band! The rest of the guys have significant talent as well, in fact I really dig how the bass playing of Ben Jones and guitar work of Matt Seidel blend together like a well-mixed margarita on a hot July day at Lost Island. Rounding out the back end (again I point to that unblemished record)the solid percussion work of Justin Higdon gives the band its strong spine and distinctive soul.
So far, my favorite song, live or recorded, from these guys is “The Hard Way.” Quality is all I have to say about that one.
Overall, Arden Park Roots’ greatest strength is in the songwriting. Their tunes have a little bit more mainstream hook than some of their reggae-rock counterparts, and that is a good thing. The band clearly exhibits some of the same crossover and broad-based ability as groups like the Expendables or Voodoo Glow Skulls. Not surprising considering that they will be opening up for the Voodoo Glow Skulls later this month – check their website for details!
All in all, Arden Park Roots has a lot of potential and can definitely make an impact in the scene. I look forward to their growth and development in the coming months and years. They certainly has the talent, ability and appeal to make some big strides. Catch Arden Park Roots next on Friday, Feb 8 at Pistol Pete’s in Auburn. Peace!
Thanks Doc!!!

Scrappy Music vows to promote underexposed musicians who have the talent, but can’t get the radio time. We have developed Scrappy Radio as a means to promote all genres of music and musicians to fans around the world. To expand our vision we will support and promote concerts, events and rad parties across the nation.
Inspired by Greatness… and Some Really Bad Concerts. Scrappy Music is inspired by bands and musicians who have played through the talking crowds, through the boos and through the heckles. To these fearless and pure performers, we applaud. Individual preference is what Scrappy Music is all about and to this mission we are determined. We believe music has many interpretations and every song creates a unique experience for each personality it reaches, so listen close and learn.
We aim to eliminate these marionette artists, whose strings are manipulated by agents and labels. In other words, we promise to keep it real.

For ethemadassassin, hustling on drug-infested streets to make a living isnt just fodder for a new song, its everyday life. And when this lyricist writes about his life in Henderson, N.C and his experiences growing up, his rhymes are blunt, candid, and real. “I won’t tell any lies to make myself sound hard or sound better than the next nigga,” E said in an interview. “I don’t try to sugar coat. I don’t exaggerate.” E, a prominent rapper in Greensboro, N.C., has been fascinated with hip hop since he was 12 years old. Some of hip hops greatest artists like Rakim and KRS 1 influenced the young E. In result, he created his own style and become a voice of wisdom in the local music industry. On his first album “proverbs”, E set himself apart from the mainstream braggadocios and gangsta wannabes, becoming the essence of what hip hop was missing: the truth. His lyrics are often confused for being “gangsta,” but E says he’s just spitting the truth about his life and the realities of the streets. “We’re all going through it,” E said. “I just paint everybody’s story. I try to make it sound almost like a textbook.” His straightforward lyrics and raw appeal landed him a spot on Jump Mobile’s promotional compilation album entitled, “Hometown Heroes”. Only a handful of artists in the Greensboro market made the cut. Today, E is celebrating the completion of his anticipated sophomore release, “tomorrow never comes”. The album is sure to boast the insightful, down-to-earth lyrics “proverbs” provided, but with more clarity. The truth will still be told.
Heads Up From Scrappy Music
It can be difficult for an aspiring musician to find successful ways to get their name out, especially when there is a scam waiting around every corner. They can range anywhere from the dishonest record label to a shady website, so it is paramount to keep your eyes peeled and beware of any offer that promises to make you the next John Mayer.
The Record Label
The easiest scam to steer away from is the deceptive record label. During my first years of actively participating in the local music scene, there was a guy who preyed on the younger musicians like my friends and I. Thankfully enough, we had older buddies who had dealt with him before and quickly turned us in the opposite direction. The idea of an album we could call our own was attractive, but the fine print in his contracts made business with him a disaster.
Beware of this situation as you search for a record company and focus on labels that have a proven track record. You may not sign with a major production label, but putting time into the selection process will reduce future headaches and pay off in the end.
CD Compilations
Look out for the “companies” that offer compilation CDs for circulation to assorted record labels and radio stations. They start by searching the music forums for recently posted songs and initiate contact with the artist by informing them that they have been chosen to be featured on a compilation CD. They give you their website to check the integrity of their proposal and pass on details of how to enter your song.
After checking out what seems to be a credible enterprise, you pay the fees and sometime later receive a burnt CD with your song included and finished off with a handmade label: obviously not the work of professionals.
To fulfill the legal obligations of the contract, they do send them to different labels and radios stations, but no one is going to listen to an unsolicited CD in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough. The best advice is to take time when thinking about submitting your music and be wary of these kinds of offers.
Music & Songwriting Contests Online
Most online contests are credible, but there are also many that are more beneficial for the person putting on the competition than the competing talent itself. Put as much thought into contests as you would a record label:
Who is judging the competition?
Who is sponsoring and covering the competition?
What are the prizes?
A competition without validity will not attract the attention of anyone credible and this will be a good indication to stay away from what appears questionable or vague.
